September was 2026's worst month for crypto hacks: about $766 million
Two incidents made up most of the losses. One of them saw most of the funds returned.
What happened
Blockchain security firm PeckShield counted 55 major incidents in September 2026 with about $766.5 million stolen. CertiK counted 97 incidents and about $768.4 million. Both called it the worst month of the year so far.
The two largest were a breach at Bitget of about $388 million and an exploit of Liquid Network of about $320 million. More than $270 million from the Liquid Network exploit was later returned. Smaller incidents included Safe Wallet (~$7.8M), DCENT (~$6M) and Duelbits (~$5.9M).
CertiK's dashboard lists 656 security incidents in 2026 so far, with total losses of about $2.68 billion.
More than $270M of the Liquid Network exploit was returned. Month total ≈ $766.5M (PeckShield).
My take Opinion, not advice.
Every trader thinks about market risk. Fewer think about platform risk, and that's the one that can take everything at once.
My rules: only what I'm actively trading sits on an exchange, 2FA everywhere, a fresh address check before every transfer, and no clicking links in DMs. Ever.
What I'm watching
- Recovery updates on the September incidents
- Exchange proof-of-reserves reports
- Phishing campaigns that follow big hacks
