Two hot inflation reports, and bitcoin holds around $82,000
September CPI and PPI both came in above expectations. Crypto held steady, but the rate path got harder to ignore.
What happened
Both the Consumer Price Index and the Producer Price Index for September came in above analysts' expectations, showing substantial price increases.
Crypto barely flinched on the day. On October 16 bitcoin opened at $82,132, up 0.7% from the previous open and 8.6% above its level a month earlier. Ether opened at $2,440. Brent crude was above $106 that morning.
Context matters here. On September 16 the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to a 3.75%–4.00% range, its first increase since 2023, in a unanimous 12–0 vote. Officials' projections now put the rate at 4.1%–4.4% by the end of 2026. The next meeting is October 27–28.
Next Fed meeting: October 27–28, 2026.
My take Opinion, not advice.
A market that ignores two hot prints is either strong or not paying attention yet. I don't know which, and I don't need to. I need to know where I'm wrong.
Rate-hike cycles change the background for every chart I look at. I treat macro dates as fixed events on my calendar, not as surprises.
What I'm watching
- The October 27–28 Fed decision and statement
- Whether December hike odds rise
- Real yields and the dollar
